Worcester Tornadoes Games are fun even if you don't know baseball :-)
Worcester Tornadoes, July 26, 2008, originally uploaded by Claudia Snell.
We took Sarah out to her first Tornadoes game last evening. Actually, it was her first baseball game.
Sarah and I usually watch the game on Ch. 3 while my husband works with the crew. We hadn't made it out because Sarah wasn't sure she'd like it. I'm not a big fan of taking her out somewhere if she's just going to want to leave immediately. Last night she agreed to give it a try and she LOVED it. We'll be doing that again for sure.
The tickets were very affordable. I even got "fancier" seats (section G) and it was only $30 to get in. I bought the seats online at the Tornadoes web site, printed them at home - VERY easy, no lines to wait in either. They have a cool seating chart on the site where you can click the seats you want and they automatically pop into your shopping cart.
Twister was nice and posed for a picture with Sarah. Which reminds me, I've posted in the past about my confusion about what species Twister is. I've even created and posted a poll to see what everyone else thinks. I love Twister (see below and vote). He's cute, lovable, great with the kids and a great sport about everything. Twister is always up for fun. I'm just not sure if Twister is a dog or a bear. It's confused me since the first time I saw him. Either way, we love Twister :-)
It was fun to see all the activity that goes on during the game. There were dancers, pie eating contests, races and rubber chicken launching activities.
In this picture you can see the little guy in green totally winning a race against Twister. Twister tried hard but the kid was just way too fast! Never underestimate the speed of tiny, little legs.
This is Twister and Peterman working the crowd. These two make sure everyone has a great time. They are all over the place during the game! It's very fun to watch. In this picture they were getting ready to do "Irish Trivia" with one of the kids in the crowd. Last evening was Irish Night sponsored by Moynihan's pub. That's why so many people are wearing green.
The kid won the trivia challenge against Twister. The question was "What did St. Patrick drive out of Ireland". Kid's answer - Snakes; Twister's - 1976 VW (oops Twister! I don't think St. Patrick had a car at all).
As part of Irish Night some of the kids from the Moynihan's family got to throw a pitch:
They were sooo cute!
There were also girls doing traditional dance on top of the Tornadoes dugout:
The crowd was huge and very awesome. We had fun talking to the people sitting around us. Everyone was really cool. We had quite a big discussion about the Cancun restaurant out in Grafton. Everyone who had been there agreed, it's the best Mexican food place around. (If you haven't been to Cancun, GO! They have great food there.) I think we talked a few people into giving it a try.
Although Sarah and I don't really know a lot about baseball, we had a great time. We'll definitely go again. It was a beautiful night to get out and enjoy being with other Worcesterites.
Oh yeah - I almost forgot, the Tornadoes did win last night. It was actually an entertaining game to watch. Ha! A whole blog post about going to the game and I didn't actually mention the game ;-) All I can say is that art/music is more my thing than sports. (Sorry sports fans - I'm trying to learn)

I am not a major baseball person either, but I'm learning, having married a big fan. Tornadoes games are great fun, a good value, and right here! But my favorite baseball outing so far was to the Vintage Base Ball Federation World Series out in Westfield Mass. last year. Such an awesome, goofy, old fashioned, family friendly time!
The vintage teams came to the field in a horse drawn wagon, played by rules that were quaint to those not familiar with regular rules and which were impressive to those who know the contemporary rules. There was a gentleman playing turn of the last century hits on the banjo, "newsies" selling programs, and big slices of apple pie for sale!
I only hope we can make it this year!

Have you been to The Canyon Cafe? Its on rt 9 and their food is amazing.
Actually, I have not been to the Canyon Cafe yet. Thanks for the tip. I'll have to check it out :-)
Great to know there's a minor league team in Worcester because I'm moving there next month. I'm a Red Sox fan, but there's nothing like a great, community-based AA or AAA ball game. Affordable, too! Cheers :)
